VINCI Construction UK had zero accidents across their North West projects in 2011. The North West region had no RIDDORS in the whole of 2011 recording an Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) of zero. The region has recorded over two million hours worked without a reportable accident.
The success of VINCI Construction UK’s low AFR is the result of a behavioural safety programme called Step UP. The programme was introduced to VINCI Construction UK’s health and safety day-to-day protocol in 2008. The training scheme is designed to reinforce preventative instead of reactive behaviour to minimise the likelihood of having an accident. Step UP is promoted to all individuals working on the project aimed at making everyone equally responsible to promote safety on sites and to take ownership of speaking out against unsafe practices and ways of thinking.
Mark Thomas, Regional Director, VINCI Construction UK Building Division – North, commented,
“We want everyone to arrive at 8am and leave work at 5pm unharmed and safe. It is essential for protocols like Step UP to be reinforced in day-to-day proceedings to create a safe working environment. The company as a whole strives to reduce their AFR by 20% year on year. As the North West exceeded this objective, our aim is to sustain zero accidents for 2012.”
Chris Hamer, Managing Director, VINCI Construction UK Building Division – North, commented,
“Our first priority of promoting health and safety was exceeded in 2011 by having zero accidents in the North West. This not only demonstrates strong proactive leadership throughout the company but vindicates how influential ‘VINCI culture’ is to our subcontracting partners and supply chain.”
