Pupils and staff from Durham Road Infants School recently took part in the topping out of the new Glan Usk Primary School in Newport, South Wales. Although topping out is a ceremony which marks the completion of the highest point of a building, the occasion was marked by the planting of a tree.
The £14.9 million contract includes the design and construction of a new primary school as part of a PFI contract signed last year between Newport City Council and Newport School Solutions Limited, a VINCI Investments joint venture company. The Civil Engineering division undertook a £4 million contract to remediate the site prior to the commencement of construction.
The new school will consist of three single-storey teaching blocks radiating from a two-storey building. Externally, a floodlit multi-use games area and all-weather pitches will be provided.
Taylor Woodrow will undertake a £7.5 million contract to fit-out and provide a full range of hard, soft and helpdesk services including the management and delivery of the life cycle capital replacement programme of works at the school for a period of 35 years upon completion.
