A gigantic piece of original artwork measuring 25m x 18m and containing around 1500 different images of 500 young people from 15 Sheffield Schools is being displayed on the iconic Park Hill Flats, Europe's largest listed building. The unveiling of the ‘Close Up’ art project was one of the highlights of the 2010 Sheffield Children’s Festival sponsored by VINCI Education.
Pupils from 15 schools worked with artist, photographer and film maker Esther Johnson, to create their own self portraits. Using a technique popularised by artist Chuck Close, the images have been positioned to create a photographic mosaic of Sherrelle Parker from Emmaus Catholic and Church of England Primary School.
Sherrelle was chosen as the subject for the project following her selection as a child who had made a real contribution to their community and would best represent the spirit of the district.
